Why are we so stressed and what can we do about it?
Updated: Apr 17, 2021
We’re all living through an incredibly stressful time right now. We're in the midst of a global pandemic and large-scale social conflict, so it’s understandable that our stress levels might be heightened. There are so many reasons we could be feeling more stressed out than usual, so below are just a few of the potential causes, along with some suggestions to help tackle the problem:

We’re constantly connected to our devices
Repeated notifications can increase our stress response. Try switching off your notifications and putting down your device for a few hours at a time.
24 hour news
Constant access to news reports can create feelings of stress, anxiety and depression. Think about limiting your consumption of news stories to just 2 or 3 times a day.
Omega 3s
Omega 3 deficiency has been linked to depression and dementia, amongst other mental health concerns. Try to eat oily fish or foods like walnuts, flax seeds, seaweed or chia seeds 3-5 times a week to support your brain health.
Exercise
Exercise can be a good stress-reliever. Try going out for a short, fast run or a good long walk if you’re feeling stressed out. On the flip side, too much high intensity exercise can actually cause stress, so balance it out with activities like yoga or swimming.
Are you getting enough sleep?
Sleep deprivation could contribute towards feelings of anxiety. Aim for 7-9 hours of sleep every night and start to wind down an hour or two before bed.

Breathe
Reset your body from fight or flight mode and into rest and digest mode by stopping to take 5 deep belly breaths twice a day. Breathe in for 4 counts, hold for 4 counts, breathe out for 4 counts, hold for 4 counts, repeat.
Keep calm and slow down
Society will have us believe that being busy and stressed out should be worn as a badge of honour. Being in a chronic state of stress is good for no-one. Take time to relax and recover, and embrace the opportunity for a slower, calmer pace of life.
